How to Secure AI API Keys in Websites

Factual Note:AI models and availability change quickly. This guide reflects the provider information reviewed on October 18, 2026.

How do you safely connect an AI model API to a website without exposing your private credentials? The fundamental rule of web security is simple: any key, token, or secret included in browser-executed JavaScript is public. To protect your API key, you must store it exclusively in a server-side environment variable and call the AI provider from a backend proxy route or serverless function—never directly from the visitor's browser.

As more web designers, frontend learners, and no-code builders add AI features to portfolio projects and client websites, accidentally shipping secret API keys in static frontend bundles has become one of the most expensive beginner security mistakes.

Why Frontend .env Variables Are Still Visible to Every Visitor

Many beginners believe that placing an API key inside a local `.env` file automatically keeps it secret. However, in modern frontend bundlers such as Vite, Next.js client components, or Create React App, any variable prefixed with `VITE_`, `NEXT_PUBLIC_`, or `REACT_APP_` is statically replaced at build time with the literal string value inside the compiled `.js` bundle.

Practical Example: If a developer writes `fetch('https://api.provider.com/v1/chat', { headers: { Authorization: 'Bearer ' + import.meta.env.VITE_AI_SECRET_KEY } })`, any visitor who opens Browser Developer Tools (F12 -> Network tab or Sources search) can copy the full secret key in under ten seconds and run automated scripts against the owner's billing account.

The 3-Step Backend Proxy Pattern

Whether you host on Netlify, Vercel, Cloudflare Pages, or a Node.js server, secure AI integration separates the public browser interface from the authenticated API call:

  • 1. Scoped Browser Request: The browser sends a minimal JSON payload (e.g., `POST /api/compile-brief`) containing only the user's selected parameters to your own domain endpoint.
  • 2. Server-Side Validation & Secret Injection: Your serverless function or backend route checks the request origin, enforces per-IP rate limits, validates input length and schema, reads `process.env.AI_API_KEY` from the server environment, and calls the upstream AI provider.
  • 3. Sanitized Output Rendering: The backend strips unnecessary metadata and returns only the safe text response, which the frontend renders as plain text rather than executing raw `innerHTML`.

Defense-in-Depth Checklist & When You Do Not Need an API at All

“Before adding an external AI API to a public website, ask whether a deterministic client-side tool can solve the user's problem faster, safer, and with zero data transmission.”

• Git Hygiene & Secret Scanning: Add `.env` and `.env.*` (except `.env.example` containing blank sample variable names) to `.gitignore` before your very first commit. If a key is ever committed to Git history, revoking and rotating the key in the provider console is mandatory—simply deleting the line in a new commit leaves the key exposed in older commits.

• Hard Billing Caps & Key Restrictions: Configure monthly spend limits, per-minute token quotas, and model allowlists in your API provider dashboard so a traffic spike cannot generate an unexpected bill.

• Zero-API Client Alternatives: Not every interactive tool requires a live LLM call. For example, the AI Prompt Builder on `dadhichart.com/ai/` runs 100% locally in the visitor's browser using deterministic template synthesis—requiring zero API keys, zero server costs, and transmitting zero personal data.
